Welcome to the NetDiary Study:
This study is open for UC Berkeley Students
What are the purposes of this study?
The NetDiary study is to research peoples mobility pattern using crowd sourced smartphone data and text data like Google Calendar. With this research, we will be able to help solve real-life problems like reducing traffic congestions and promoting ridesharing. Your participation will contribute towards a smarter and greener community.
What will I be asked to do?
Step 1 : Complete a 10-minute online survey. To start click here.
Step 2 : Install a mobile app on your smartphone and keep it running in the background during the entire study. For further details click here .
Step 3 : Complete NetDiary surveys that we will be sending you daily. You will receive reminders via email and on the smartphone app.
What benefit will I receive for participating?
You will receive a maximum of $60 for completing the NetDiary Study. The breakdown is shown below.
$5 : Completing the entry survey. Giving us access to your Google Calendar.
$15 : Keeping the smartphone app running through the study. We will be evaluating your smartphone data at the end of the study.
There are 8 randomly selected NetDiary surveys that are worth $5 each.
The reward is based on the number of randomly selected NetDiary surveys you finish at the end of the study.
(Eg. if you finish 5 out of the 8 selected NetDiary surveys, the reward is $25)
Total: up to $60
The reward will be distributed by UC Berkeleys, XLab at the end of the study.
What will I be asked in the NetDiary surveys?
The NetDiary surveys will ask about what you did during the day. You will fill your activities and trips on the provided online survey form.
What does the app do?
The app will passively collect location data. You can also use the app to view your rewards and access the NetDiary. Your data is encrypted and secured in ISTs Cloud Computing Services . We did our best to optimise the battery background performance of the app because continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. If you experience any battery issues running the app please contact us directly so that we help you resolve the issue.
What will researchers do with my data?
Your data will be used solely for research aimed at improving campus transportation services as stated in the Informed Consent Form .
